I have been living my life in fast forward
Racing to the finish line, the success at the end of the journey
Accelerating through the pain, nights alone
And the screaming silence in my head
Spending nights spittin’ for you on stages
So that you can know my shell and not my enemy
My inner me
But today I will stand and linger longer and enjoy these moments
This journey,
So don’t ask me how the grind is
Ask me about my family and god children and friends
And I’ll tell you about my mother
Who worked more hours building others’ dreams than her own
And works three jobs just to keep her house her own
I’ll tell you I love her fiancé
And that I’m angry at him
For loving her but not himself enough
And the diabetes that cost him his foot
And may take his life
Before he can call my mother his wife
And of her tears at night that she hides
I’ll tell you stories of her pride in me and that look in her eye
When she sees her son succeed or fail or try
I’ll tell you of my goddaughters
My trinity,
Dailyn goddess, Mariah goddess and Mykala goddess
Who I fathered and still feel she’s mine
And how their smiles brighten my darkest moments
Ask me about me, and how I cry into these sheets
Because my eyes won’t form tears
See I’ve been living my life in fast forward
Trying to avoid the pain
But only miss the joys, and the tears that make them worth it
And make them sweeter
And how I’m grateful to Ashley for leaving
Because mama told they’re called growing pains
And I grew thru my depression
Since fire hardens steel
I’ll tell you that I hate being a poet
And hate poetry underlined that I am both poet and poetry
Healing me thru you being free
Ask me about me, and I’ll tell you
I have been living my life in fast forward
Can’t pause or stop time
But now I will my life in slow motion

40 years ago my mother age 13 cried in East Harlem streets
Faced with the enormity of a dream deferred
57 years after it was published a vision has been realized
11/11/08 age 25 I witnessed women and men in tears on DC streets
Faced with a brighter tomorrow
And I wish Langston were here to witness as I recite this prose
Rewriting lines of the future for my unborn children
And a new poem inscribed Yes We Can!
First line opens to “it’s time for change”
And I wonder if the steps to the mountain top rest at Lincoln’s feet
If the Promised Land will begin to materialize over the next four years
If an Audubon Ballroom will shed crimson colored light on the Oval Office
If character content finally has prevailed by any means
Necessary for us to see that Umoja is colorblind and doesn’t care about age or theology
And I am grateful for feeling that anything is possible
If you paint the vision with the right brush
If you script the dream with the right pen
Built upon the right foundation
Obama the world thanks you
For your name replacing “wassup” in our lingo
“Obama!!!” is how my peers and I greet each other
You are our celebrity
Bigger than your own name and office
Larger than the prayers of a nation
You have responded to a global need for hope
And there is no “I” in Team or Dream
But our eyes have refocused when you came into contact with us
And we know how it feels to be
The fatherless child far away from a country
Nursed but received malnutrition
Until starvation made us stronger
Made us prepare made our offspring beautiful collages
And it’s a compliment when you call us an “Obama”-nation
And if the maze of politics leaves you lost
Remember you have revitalized the Dream, made us believe, and given us a creed
Yes We Can!
Yes We Can!
Yes We Can!
And we know because we did!

No, I don’t want to be your friend
And you offer it as if it were some consolation prize
That I should be honored to receive
And I’m an asshole if I say no because I want the benefits that he gets
I’m the one that you run to tell all your secrets
But at night I’m not the one that you sleep with
So many times before I just swept my feelings under the carpet
And continued to walk over the floor
Not wanting to be the next man to make you feel like a whore
Watching playa after playa walking in and out of the door
And I reap the benefit of bandaging your sores
So excuse me if I say
No, I’m not and don’t want to be your friend
I didn’t gather the courage to ask for your number
To become your bestest best friend
No thank you, I got more than enough of them
I’m such a nice guy and you don’t want to taint what we have together
You tell me through friendship we can have forever
Excuse me if I say
No thank you, fuck that shit - I don’t want your friendship
That doesn’t mean I want a relationship, with each and every chick
This is an announcement that you can’t come crying to me
Over the ways that you’ve been hurt by him
I won’t be backed into a position
Where I’m obligated to listen about how all men aint shit
No, it’s just your selection process is retarded
Women say they don’t sleep with their friends
But then say that all good relationships are built on friendship
I won’t be sitting by your side for two years
To be your one night stand so you can get over him
You don’t see it, but this is your form of using me
So, No, I don’t want to be your friend
I don’t want to listen to conversations about him
I don’t want to wait six months to get the panties
Because he didn’t either
Give me my pussy now, please, thank you
We’re not friends so don’t ask me who I’m dating, or why I’m single
Not knocking me, but if you couldn’t see it, then why should she
And don’t ask me to write you poetry, it’s draining
It’s reserved for the women I’m actually sleeping with
And you just want to be my friend

The first time I heard the song “Lollipop”
A group of sixth graders were singing it
In that moment I felt the responsibility that these words come with hit me
And I felt sorry for our teens
For our lack of discretion when freaky pillow talk becomes hot music
And we use radio programming to abuse them
On VH1 and MTV number 1 on the playlist I B.E.T. you’re a rapist

We have a responsibility for these words

And I dare one of you niggas to tell my baby girls to “lick the rapper”
You’ll only have liquid foods and lick your foods when I’m finish closing your trap up
And I’m offended
It’s like you asked her to raise her skirt up
Told her don’t tell nobody, keep it a secret
And whispered “Wait Til You See My D*ck”
Maybe we’re all sick
Cus we buy it mp3s, ringtones and all
Payola, spin it on the radio 5 o’clock drive and all night long
Programming it into her brain
That she can drive nice whips if she gives the right entertainer brains
And she don’t gotta be wifey material
Just open your legs you’ll get shopping sprees and platinum chains
I’m not inspired; your ghost writer could be a lot tighter

We have a responsibility for these words

In the club you can’t make love, all you can do is fuck
And degrade yourself
What happened to the days when our women were our wealth?
Momma told me careful what you say
You’re still the pervert that taught it to her and she’s only 8
And we think it’s funny when she can sing the hook to the song
Take a look at this picture tell me what’s wrong
We make songs about sex and drugs and sell it to our children like a candy shop
And I know real men are few and far between in the black community
But if I “Supermaned” your daughter what would you do to me?

We have a responsibility for these words

And there are solutions, like
Stop buying this bullshit
Boycott Viacom til they put Teen Summit back on
Fathers teach your sons that women are queens
Mothers teach your daughters to understand what that means
And turn off the radio and TV, we have a responsibility
